how to say: I Love You

to everyone I ever loved, am loving, will love

you know how it is
when your heart is full to bursting
stretched, waiting
for a time to pour out everything
inside it

you know how it is
when words bubble up into your throat
ticklish, expectant
for a time to float out away
into the world

that’s how i feel when i want to say
I Love You
that’s how i feel when i’m full, so full of you
everything so grounded yet flying away

love is a choice that we make
when we care
beyond ourselves

love is a choice that we make
when we are consumed
with someone
besides ourselves

love is a choice that we make
when we adore
when we respect
that special someone

love is never a feeling
but out of love comes
feelings

love may not always be
happy
but love is always
secure

but how to say
I Love You
when my throat is closed
and choking
and on fire with fear
and unshed tears
when my sight
blurs and rages
against the inside of my eyelids
in anger

how to say
I Love You
when I’m consumed
with myself
only how
I feel
when I’m so tense
with expectations
of myself

how to say
I Love You
when I’m tossed from
wave to wave
drowning in a storm
of confusion
grief

how to say
I Love You
when I’ve presented
my body of dust
still bleeding
let you take my heart
and you took me apart
piece by piece

how to say
I Love You
in the quiet of night
in the peace of the morning
when the presence of stars
are the presence of my love
so close
yet so far

when I can’t even speak
a single word
my throat tight
with anticipation
when I don’t know how to say it
when words are locked deep down in my heart
in this treasure chest
and all I have
are feelings

when nightfall drifts upon us
upon sentences never uttered
over thoughts never shared
how to say I Love You
when anything I could say
is not quite enough

all I can muster
is silence
quiet
moonlight
all I can give you is
a touch
and a gaze
all I can give you
is me
right now
sinking with you
feeling you beside me
and myself to hold
and my arms for you
all I can give you right now
is my presence –
shared touch to make up for
everything I can’t say

  1. Hi Emily,

Love in action. The Lord moves it in us and shows us how to give it to others. Yes, even when words fail.

    Thank you,

    Gary

  2. Wow. I enjoyed reading that, even the difficult part, I literally felt the choking feeling in my throat. You took me there with your words, this is awesome, really. You’ve almost inspired me to go back to writing poetry again, almost 😎
